St. Rose of Lima

Born in 1586 in Lima, Peru to Spanish colonists. Her real name is Isabel Flores de Olivia Known for being exceptionally beautiful. She earned the nickname “Rose” for her beauty. She is the first saint born in the Americas. Who was St. Rose of Lima?

St. Rose At her confirmation in 1597, she took the name Rose. According to a legend, a servant had a vision in which her face turned into a rose. From an early age, she wanted to become a nun. Often, she prayed and fasted in secret. She would even perform secret penances, during some of which were painful and severe. St. Rose

Because of her beauty, she began to attract men, but did not want this attention because of her dedication to God, so she took measures to hurt her looks. She rubbed her face pepper to make it blister and cropped her hair short. She spent long periods of time cloistered in her room in prayer. Apparently, she slept only 2 hours a night to pray more.

At the age of 20, she entered the Third Order of St. Dominic. An extreme diet move for the time, St. Rose quit eating meat altogether. At the age of 20, she entered the Third Order of St. Dominic. She continued to pray extremely, fast and perform penance. Sometimes, she would burn her hands in an act of penance. She was also known to wear a heavy silver crown with spikes to pierce her skin. This crown reminded her of the crown of thorns and at one point a spike had lodged itself so deeply in her skull it was difficult to remove.

“When her parents fell into financial trouble, she worked in the garden all day and sewed at night. She struggled against her parents for 10 years when they tried to make Rose marry. They refused to let her enter a convent, and out of obedience she continued her life of penance and solitude at home as a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic.” Franciscanmedia.org Her Works

During the last few years of her life, she set up a room in her house for the elderly, homeless children, and sick. This was the beginning of social services in Peru. Her Works

Her death She died on August 25, 1617 at the age of 31. Legend says that she accurately predicted the date of her death. After miracles and cured were attributed to her, she was beatified by Pope Clement IX in 1667 and canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671. Her feast day is August 23 globally and August 30 in Peru. St. Rose is the patroness of embroiderers, gardeners, florists, those who suffer ridicule for their piety, and people who suffer family problems. Her death
