TAX Fall 2017

Bellringer Nov. 27th Convert each decimal to a percent .45 = ____ 1.15 = ___ What is 20% of 450?

What do you notice? What do you wonder? You are on vacation and want to buy a pair of sunglasses for $10 or less. You find a pair with a pricetag of $10. THe cashier says the total cost will be $10.45

What is Tax???? Let’s brainstorm:

What is Tax???? Tax is money that the government collects based on income, sales, and other activities. Tax is in proportion to the amount of money involved. Example: Aleksey’s shirt cost $14.50, but when he went to pay the register showed $15.37. He had to pay $.87 in sales tax.

How do we calculate tax? Here are 5 REALLY important questions for this unit: What is my percent? What is my percent as a decimal? Is my problem increasing or decreasing? What am I trying to find? What info am I given?

Mr. Dargo went to Olive Garden…. Calculate the sales tax and total if the tax rate is 9.5% What is my percent? What is my percent as a decimal? Is my problem increasing or decreasing? What am I trying to find? What info am I given? Tax: ______ Total: _____

Mrs. Taylor Needs Help! Mrs. Taylor needs some help with her math because she chose to be a language arts teacher instead of a math teacher. Let’s help her figure out her question…. She only has $12 in her wallet and is craving Olive Garden. Her favorite dish is ravioli which costs $10.99. Does she have enough cash if the sales tax is 7.5%? Tax: ______ Total: ______

Tax Activity Directions: It’s that time of the year. Budgets are tight. The following purchases have been made. Determine the tax and total to see if you’re under, over, or on-budget for the holidays! Refer to the questions on your desk to guide you through the process of each problem! HOLIDAY BUDGET: $2,500.00

TIP Fall 2017

Bellringer Nov. 28th Toyota is running a special on the 2018 Camry XSE for $28,450. Not factoring interest rates, what would be the total price of the car if sales tax rate is 8%? Tax: _______ Total: _______

What is a TIP???? Let’s brainstorm:

What is a TIP???? A tip (also known as gratuity) is a custom in which an extra amount of money is paid for a service in addition to the total cost. Example: Marilyn’s massage cost $70, but she gave a 15% tip to the masseuse for doing such a wonderful job, making the total bill $80.50.

How do you calculate a TIP? Refer back to your graphic organizer! What is my percent? What is my percent as a decimal? Is my problem increasing or decreasing? What am I trying to find? What info am I given? Finding tip is very similar to calculating tax. Calculate the percentage of tip you would like to give and then add that onto the total price of the service.

Giving a Tip You order coffee and a muffin at Spencer’s coffee shop for $6.50. The latte is so yummy that you would like to give a 10% tip to the barista. What is my percent? What is my percent as a decimal? Is my problem increasing or decreasing? What am I trying to find? What info am I given? Tip: ________ Total: _______

Giving a Tip You take a Uber in New York City to the Gershwin Theater. The total cost of the fair is $12.85. You would like to give the driver a 20% tip. What is the total cost of the fair including your tip? *Remember your questions! Tip: _______ Total: ______

Salon Mrs. Burnette went to the salon and got a manicure for $35 and a haircut for $40. She wants to leave a 25% tip. What is the total cost of her time at the salon? **Remember your questions!!! Tip: _______ Total: _______

Tip Activity Find tip and total for each problem. Don’t forget to use your graphic organizer.
