This power point and most of our Unit 1 and 2 materials were created by Mr. Gord and adapted for our class.
Grab a handout packet & calculator you may need to share calculators, we are using Mrs. Starr’s calculators so please treat them with respect. You may use your own calculator. Today’s Topic: Earth’s Motion Goals Define Rotation Calculate Earth’s Rate of Rotation at various Latitudes Identify direction of Earth’s Rotation Compare Earth’s Rotational Period to other Planets.
Rotation defined… Spinning of one object around its own axis.
Effects of Rotation Rising and Setting of celestial objects Night, day Coriolis Effect (swirling, curving, deflecting winds around a low pressure system – like a hurricane) Oblate Spheroid
Northern Hemisphere Southern Hemisphere
Rotation proof… Foucault Pendulum Proves Earth’s Rotation
Foucault Pendulum Device conceived as an experiment to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth. The introduction of the Foucault pendulum in 1851 was the first simple proof of the rotation in an easy-to-see experiment. Today, they are popular displays in science museums and universities.

Rotation is unique? All planets rotate. All planets rotate at their individual rate
Earth’s Direction of rotation Earth’s Direction of Rotation is… West to East, CCW (NP), CW (SP)
Earth’s Period of Rotation is … (ABOUT 24 hrs)

Calculate the rate of Earth’s rotation at various latitudes
At the equator At 0o latitude, on the equator, if each degree of longitude is separated by approx. 70 miles I need to see work/calculations that justify the answers.
On a clean sheet of paper Calculate the rate of Earth’s rotation at various latitudes… I need to see work/calculations that justify the answers.
At 0, 20, 40, 70, 90o 0 = circ is 25, 000 miles 20 = 23, 400 mi 40 = 19,080 mi 70 = 8,640 mi 90 = ? What part of the Earth is rotating the fastest? Write a sentence that shows the relationship between latitude and rotational speed?
Assignment Using Page 577. Calculate the rotational speed of each of the planets at their equator? Answer in mi/hour. I need to see the work/calculations! A. Which planet rotates the fastest? B. Which Planet rotates the slowest? C. Is there a pattern? Describe. D. What do you think the SHAPE of Jupiter is? Why?
