Synthetic Metric Rules Best Practices Thad White Technical Marketing
Event Types Availability - Availability errors occur when the application does not respond, or when the application responds with an error that indicates it is unavailable. Accuracy - Accuracy errors are calculated with the assumption that monitored applications are working as designed and that the information transmitted to clients is correct. Functions that can be evaluated to determine accuracy include link checking, content validation, title validation, and response data verification. Execution - An execution error indicates that there were problems with the script execution. It does not indicate anything about the health of the application. Performance - End-to-end latency of the transaction measured in seconds © Copyright 2018 BMC Software, Inc. - BMC Confidential—Internal Use Only

Helpful Hints Turn off SLA if not needed Edit catch all rules when applicable if using them Consider re-classifying accuracy and execution errors If possible, create a single rule for all metrics. This will depend on several factors Use the %-age of locations and violation frequency options Big funnels first, then add additional rules as needed Count on at least one rule per app. (specifically for performance) Remember the rule hierarchy © Copyright 2018 BMC Software, Inc. - BMC Confidential—Internal Use Only
Helpful Hints Cont… Use rule cloning when possible If upgrading from 10.7 or 11 to 11.3, read over what happens during rule migration Leverage BMC tools and documentation for upgrading from TMART and migrating the rules © Copyright 2018 BMC Software, Inc. - BMC Confidential—Internal Use Only
