What is Informational Writing? Informational writing is defined as presenting reasons, explanations, or steps in a process An informational essay should follow a logical sequence and have three different main points Logic and coherence is the main focus of an expository essay

How is informative writing different from narrative writing? Question

Narrative vs. Expository Tells a story Has action Author’s purpose: to entertain Has conflict & dialogue Has characters & theme Has a definite beginning, middle, and end Key words- Tell about a time, tell what happened next, and write a story Ex. Folktale, fable, myths, suspense-filled stories Provides information Explanations/ directions Author’s purpose: to inform or explain Has a central idea (thesis) Organized by: compare/contrast, cause & effect, chronological order, problem & solution, or question/answer Key words- Explain, tell how Ex. Internet, biography, dictionary, encyclopedia

Informative Writing Introduction of an informative essay should include the main idea and what the essay is about The three main reasons supporting this main idea should also be included in the introduction

Key Terms for Informative Writing Thesis Statement: The main idea of the whole essay Transition words: Words such as first, second, as a result, which make transitions easy in the essay. Main Ideas: Each paragraph should have a main point or idea Supporting Details: Details support the main ideas

Tips on Informative Writing It should be fact-based. Facts can be quotes, statistics, definitions, names, dates, events. It should be formal. Remember who your reader is (the teacher!). Use examples. Explain what you mean. Don’t be overwhelmed. You have a lot of valuable stuff to say. Your teachers want to read it.

Introduction Now let’s write the introduction together, now that we know what we are writing about. 1. Hook- Hook your reader with a question, quote, short anecdote, or personal experience statement
