Move On Carefully: numeracy Module 2: Handling numbers confidently

Module aims To enable participants to: consolidate numeracy skills around handling numbers confidently and relating this to their work role(s) prepare for typical questions from the Level 1 National Certificate in Adult Numeracy.

Module objectives Participants will: discuss the concept of place value, including in decimals discuss and use large numbers consider multiplying and dividing by 10 and how this can be used consider ways to learn and remember multiplication bonds relate handling numbers to their work role and their own experience

Relationships between equations 40 × 2 = 40 + 40 = 80 80 ÷ 2 = 40 40 × 2 = 80

Working with large numbers 12 347 806 2 000 000 2,000,000 425 000 000 637 529

Relationships between numbers Multiples Factors Square numbers

Learning multiplication bonds Look for patterns Find ways to remember that work for you Practise: – regularly – in small ‘bites’

Multiplication – using the bonds you know 4 × 8 7 × 8 9 × 6 7 × 5

Using and improving your maths Programme journal: What have you learnt? How might you use the skills in your working or everyday life? What do you want to practise more (if anything)?
