Sergeant York Hero Of WWI By Elin Atteberry

His Early Years Born Alvin York Dec, 13th 1887 in Pall Mal, Tenn. Was 3rd oldest out of 11 children His whole family was dirt poor, and he attended school for only nine months.

His Life in Tennessee As York became older he became known for his incredible marksmanship. He hunted deer, squirrels, raccoons, etc, and he farmed to help support his family.

His Conversion He would hang out in bars, and people thought that he would never amount to anything. He began to see his need for God when his best friend was killed in a bar fight. He was born again in 1914, and this totally turned his life around. His future wife Gracie Williams encouraged him to change.

His Military Career He was drafted when he was thirty. He objected to war because he thought it was evil. The army wouldn’t release him as a conscientious objector. During target practice he would not shoot at human silhouettes.

The Argonne Campaign York and his 17 comrades accidentally found themselves behind enemy lines. York’s commanding officer was injured and ordered York to take out the machine gun nests.

After the War He returned home and married Gracie Williams They had seven children, and a movie was made about York
