Welcome to Curriculum Night

Welcome to 5th Grade! This is an important year for your student! You will see big changes socially and academically. If you have any questions during our presentation, please feel free to ask.

Our Mission Chippewa Valley Schools, in partnership with the community, will provide a safe, inviting and supportive environment that engages students and prepares them to be successful and to contribute in an ever-changing world.

Our School’s Goals Writing Goal: All students will improve their writing by incorporating an organized structure with relevant details and examples. Reading Goal: All students will increase their ability to comprehend and apply information found in text. Math Goal: All students will improve their math achievement.

5th Grade Goals We will provide the academic tools your child needs to progress to 6th grade. We will provide a supportive learning environment. We will encourage each student to develop self-responsibility.

Class Content We will cover all the subjects and topics that our state believes are important for your child to learn during 5th grade. M-STEP will be administered in the spring. Students will take a Science, Math and ELA assessment.

Math Taught by Mrs. North It is important for your child to know their multiplication tables! We will be working in groups and include investigations, vocabulary, reasoning, problem solving, etc. Home Connection homework should be signed/initialed by parent or guardian.

Literacy Block Taught by Mrs. Jablonski Students will read many different styles of writing and study the English language. Students will focus on building their reading and writing strategies.  Students will receive instruction in all strategies, but will have individual goals for independent instruction and practice based on assessments and need. Students will be challenged to read 40 books this year. This can be done in class and at home.  To improve reading skills/strategies students should read 20 minutes a night for at least five nights a week. Wednesday – Library

Social Studies Taught by Mr. Eckman Students will concentrate on the early eras of the U.S. through the Bill of Rights. African history Major events in the formation of the U.S. Structure of federal and state government Decision Making, Public Discourse and Citizen Involvement

Science Taught by Mr. Eckman Students will be exploring exciting topics such as animals, body systems, heredity and evolution, force and motion, and the solar system. Science lessons will consist of informational reading, hands on exploration and experiments, and research and discovery!

Watch D.O.G.S. WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is an innovative program being used by schools across America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of fathers and father-figures in their student's life.  Our goal is to have you spend at least one day this year at the school to be a positive male role model and to provide an extra set of eyes and ears.  Watch for more information regarding our Kick-Off in October.

A Love and Logic Classroom We will treat you with respect so you will know how to treat me. Feel free to do anything that doesn’t cause a problem for yourself or anyone else. If you cause a problem, teachers will ask you to solve it. If you can’t, or choose not to, teachers will do something. The solution will depend on the person and the situation. If you feel something is unfair, whisper to me, “I’m not sure that’s fair,” and we will talk.

Homework No assignments are collected the same day as assigned. (Unless it is a quiz or a test or specified on the day’s agenda.) It is recommended that you check and sign your child’s agenda every evening. Ask to see their completed homework. Vacation Policy –no homework given in advance. Illnesses – please call the office before 9:00 a.m. if you would like to pick up homework.

Ways to stay “in touch”: How do I know what’s going on? Sign your child’s agenda every day AFTER making certain that homework is completed.
