Repair in Talk Sixth Week

What do you mean?

Miscommunication Have you experienced miscommunication in your talk? What is the cause of miscommunication? How can we avoid it? Is it true that good talk must not consist of miscommunication?

Miscommunication Are these the same? Misunderstanding Mishearing Non-understanding Not hearing Misinterpretation Joking

In our discussion,… ….the process of fixing miscommunication will be referred to as “repair”, ….we will be using “trouble source” to refer to “the cause of miscommunication”.

Talk analysts look at… The cause of miscommunication. Is it far from the repair? How many turns away? Will it be repaired? Who repairs miscommunication? The person who causes it? Everyone else. Is the miscommunication repaired successfully??

Assignment 2 (15%) Listen to a conversation among your family members. Roughly transcribe the talk in which repair is found (3 incidences of repair; 2%x3= 6%). Identify the trouble source (1%x3=3%). Describe the nature of the trouble source. Indicate whether it is (1%x3=3%): Self-initiated other-repair, Other-initiated self-repair, or Other-initiated other-repair
