Group A: You will be given a puzzle in the box and asked to complete the puzzle together as a group. Please do not start until all groups have received the puzzle pieces. Group B: You will be given a puzzle in a bag and asked to complete the puzzle individually at your tables. Please do not start until all groups have received the puzzle pieces.

That’s not fair! Group A Group B Were allowed to work collaboratively on the task Had the benefit of end product image to compare pieces to. Image provided on puzzle was familiar to participants Group B Must work individually to plan the arrangement of puzzle pieces Must complete the task without knowing what the end product should look like. Had to work on a puzzle that dealt with an abstract image. http://women2.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Unfair.jpg

Relationship to Teaching Collaborative planning Planning for education is better when it can be done collaboratively with your peers. Backwards mapping Teaching is more effective when you teach with the end (assessment) in mind Real world application Application of skills to real world scenarios allows student's to “take” content and use it beyond the walls of the school. Effective Teaching Real World Application Backwards Mapping Collaborative Planning

We don’t want this to be our kids http://spinsucks.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Real-World-Experience.jpg So how can we avoid this scenario while also having effective teaching practices?

IB nformation asic The International Baccalaureate is an organization in charge of 4 international education programmes that serves over 1 million students all over the world. The 4 programmes Primary Years Programme Middle Years Programme Diploma Programme IB Career related Programme Each programme is unique and can be run independently, however when run together they form the IB Continuum. Regardless of programme, the IB mission stays constant.

How does IB MYP help solve our problems? IB is: A rigorous curriculum framework – any local curriculum can filter through the framework Relevant and meaningful to students Backward curricular design International/globally minded Holistic – 8 subjects taught in 6-10th grade: Arts, Humanities, Language A, Mathematics, Language B, Technology, Science, & P.E.

Don’t worry … be happy IB is not: A different or harder curriculum Exclusive to advanced students More work for the students Form filling

IB MYP: What does it look like in practice? As Evident In Academics: All 9th -10th grade students required to participate Emphasis on language and technology Paradigm shift in teacher pedagogy (MYP Unit Planner) Align IBO objectives to local objectives (Common core.. etc.) Collaborative Planning

IB MYP: What does it look like in practice? Cont. As Evident In Academics: Criterion based assessments (subject specific) Personal Project in the 10th grade year – similar to an action research project by each student Incorporate the Learner Profile into student activities (academic and non-academic.)

THE HOLY GRAILs of teaching IB MYP: Unit planner MYP: Principles into practice Tool for collaborative planning Backwards mapping Info on inquiry based education How to plan and report student achievement Subject specific curriculum guide

Expectations The 8 subject areas will plan ALL units with the end assessment in mind. Backwards mapping is evident in order to support the end assessment task. The end assessment task is graded using the appropriate criterion. Assessment tasks show real world applications to relatable scenarios.

Further Support I will be coming to many of your collaborative planning meetings over the next few weeks in order to help you begin the exciting process of using the MYP unit planner to facilitate education. Date Focus Aug. Meeting MYP Induction Training Sept. Training IB Subject Objective Alignment and Subject Unit Planning Oct Training What the IB Classroom Looks Like: Incorporating AOI, unit questions, and learner profile with everyday instruction. Nov. Training MYP Assessment and Criterion Grading Jan. Training Reflection & Adjustment of Unit Planner
