Dystopia Day 9

When you enter class… Reminder: your cell phone is already away in your backpack  Pick up purple handout and two scantrons Take out your articles

“No One Died in Tiananmen Square” What is Lutz’s thesis? How does Lutz hint at his disagreement with the statement “No one died in Tiananmen Square”? Thematically, how does this essay link with 1984? In other words, what theme do both pieces share?

Today Warm-up: “No One Died…” Discuss 1984 related articles Introduce seminar entry ticket Vocab / Grammar Unit 1 Tests HW: 1. Rough draft 2. Seminar entry ticket due Friday

Key Questions Context: Why did the authors write these books? Interpretation: What do their works communicate to readers? Connection: Why do we still read them today?

Evaluating Connections What’s the connection? What similarities do we see? What differences? What is the strength of the connection? Is the comparison a reasonable one?

Relevance Which connection did you think was strongest? Weakest?

Relevance to U.S. Media and politics Renewed claims of 1984 with Trump election Alternative facts “Don’t believe what you see” UN laughter

Testing Don’t look at other’s tests and do your best to prevent others from seeing yours. Place your blocker so it projects at least 6 inches from the desk, towards you to prevent the old lean back. Nothing on the desk except the test and writing utensil. No pencil pouches or cell phones. You must use a pencil on a scantron test. No pens. You can write on this test. Place your test in the appropriate piles when finished. If you miss a test, you have one week to make it up.

Snapshots of American Media On June 28, 2012, the United States Supreme Court ruled that many provisions of the Affordable Care Act (the health care law that is referred to as Obamacare) were constitutional, including the controversial “individual mandate,” which requires the uninsured to purchase health insurance. In general, Republicans opposed the act while Democrats supported it. The following screenshots were taken within hours of the ruling.

Fringe Online Media First we’ll look at The Drudge Report and The Huffington Post. These are independently operated news websites that are known to have strong conservative or liberal bias (see if you can figure them out).

Cable News And now from 24 hour cable news networks…

Newspapers Lastly, here are images from the websites for widely respected newspaper.
