An Algebra I Lesson on Slope Mrs. Long Adapted for Skip Tyler

Imagine yourself...

What is the meaning of this sign? A) icy road ahead B) steep road ahead C) curvy road ahead D) trucks entering highway ahead

Objectives The student will be able to: 1) define slope as “rise over run.” 2) explain how to determine the slope of a staircase or a handicap ramp.

Slope is the steepness of a line. It can also be defined as rise over run (vertical change over horizontal change).

Vertical Change Horizontal Change This ratio is also known as Rise Run

Determine the slope of the line. Graph the points (-2, -2) and (4, 1) and apply “rise over run”. 6 3 rise/run = 3/6 = 1/2

Determine the slope of the line. EXPLAIN to your neigbhor how to determine “rise over run”. 6 3 rise/run = 3/6 = 1/2

How would you determine the slope of the staircase?

Time for your job interview! Legally, handicap ramps cannot rise more than 1 inch for every 12 inches of run. How would you determine if the slope of the ramp below is legal?
