Tejano Music and The Impact of Selena By: Derek Phakoo

Origins The Mexican Revolution from 1910-1917 was when Tejano music was created. Combination of polkas, “baladas”, rock, pop, country, reggae and rap. Conjunto music is another term because it involves accordion ensembles, guitars and bass like instruments.

Origins Cont. Tejano music originated in the state of Texas and is referred “Tex-Mex” because of the origin. There have been many success stories such as Selena Quintanilla Perez and Carlos Santana.

Selena Quintanilla Perez Born in Freeport, TX in 1971. By the age of 12 she was doing public concerts. By age 14 her and her group Los Dinos recorded their first hit. Her family was also part of her band.

Selena Continued Selena grew up speaking English, but her father taught her to sing in Spanish to resonate with the Latino community. In 1987, she won best female vocalist of the year and performer of the year. She was the first Tejano to ever win a Grammy.

Selena Cont. Besides from performing, she designed clothes and started her own boutiques. She strongly encouraged kids especially Latinos to go to school and helped out with the D.A.R.E. program. She also married her guitarist Chris Perez in 1992.

Death President of her fan club Yolanda Saldivar shot and killed Selena on March 31st, 1995. Yolanda was embezzling money from her fan club and upon her firing she killed Selena. She was only 23 when she died.

Aftermath Her funeral drew more than 60,000 mourners. George W. Bush declared April 12th as “Selena Day” in Texas when he was the governor. In 1995, Selena was inducted into the Latin Hall of Fame.
