Wednesday 3/1/17 Notebook Entry: What do you think causes wind?

Winds Heating of Earth’s Surface The angle of the sun's rays causes temperature differences at Earth's surface. Which area on Earth receives the most direct light from the sun, and which areas receive the least? How would the type of material at Earth’s surface affect temperature differences?

Winds The Coriolis Effect The Coriolis effect determines the direction of global winds.

Label conduction, convection, radiation over this diagram

What causes wind? Unequal temperatures cause a change in the density of air (air pressure). This causes the air particles to move. Cold air moves towards warm air.

Which absorbs heat faster? Water or land?

Land breeze vs. Lake/Sea breeze Animation What happened to the temperature of the air above the ocean water in 24 hrs.? What happened to the temperature of the air above the land in 24 hrs. Does temperature affect where the air moves to?

Things to Remember Warm air is less dense that cold air causing it to rise. Cold air will move in to take the place of warm air. This creates the movement of air, aka Wind! Land heats up and cools down faster than water.

Land Breeze vs. Sea Breeze Diagrams On your worksheet sketch a diagram to show how heat transfer causes the wind Use colors and labels to show the types of heat transfer radiation, convection, conduction Remember Vocab Cards are due tomorrow
