LOG BOOK Everything that is done, must be documented in the logbook with a date, time and location. topic selection, problem statement and hypothesis, variables, materials, procedures, risk and safety factors, data table with data entered and graph, analysis of your data, research and graphic organizer, written conclusions; and reflections of what happens or what is done

The Science teacher must approve the topic ... Topic Selection The Science teacher must approve the topic ... ONCE THE EXPERIMENT IS APPROVED BY THE TEACHER AND SIGNED BY THE PARENT IT CANNOT BE CHANGED! Please make certain your child writes down the topic and why it was chosen on P. 2 of the logbook.

How to Choose a Topic: Students are not allowed to conduct experiments involving: Bacteria, Mold or Animals Topics must be measurable: Height grown Distance Traveled Speed Acceleration Density Number that changed Temperature

Problem Statement This is a question or statement that asks what you are trying to find out!! Some students did this when they found their topics. Example: How much salt can be produced from salt water? Example: How many times does a balloon need to be rubbed to create enough static electricity to stick to a wall? Example: Which mixture of soil filters impurities from water the best?

Our Example for Today Problem Statement Can you make Alka-Seltzer® fizz faster or slower by changing the temperature of the water?

If this is done, then this is predicted to happen. Forming a Hypothesis If this is done, then this is predicted to happen. 1. If a balloon is rubbed 10 times, then it will stick to a wall. 2. If water is evaporated from a seawater, then 45% of the seawater will be salt.

No PRONOUNS should be used when writing a hypothesis. Wrong: If I mix sandy and peaty soil with dirt, then I predict the sandy soil will be effected more by erosion. Right: If water is poured on sandy soil and peaty soil that are both mixed with dirt, then the sandy soil will show more erosion. If the experimenter pours water on sandy soil and peaty soil that are both mixed with dirt, then the sandy soil will show more erosion.

Our Example For Today Forming a Hypothesis If the temperature of water is increased then, the rate of reaction of a tablet of Alka-Seltzer® will increase.

on appropriate research sub-topics. Reading teachers will go over the research process and how to complete the bibliography. This can be done using the internet, Millennium Media Center and/or the county library. Students will be shown how to use their Hypothesis and Problem Statement to decide on appropriate research sub-topics. However, unless otherwise notified, students will be responsible for their own research. Research will NOT be done during class time at school.

Written Report Research organizer information will be used to write the research paper. The research paper should be at least 2 typed pages, 12 font and double spaced. ATTENTION 8TH GRADE!!! 8th Grade students only will submit their two page research paper to www.turnitin.com no later than 11:59 PM on December 2nd, 2018 and need to print a copy to include in their research report.

Procedure Numbered steps of what to do to complete the experiment. Must be written in the logbook and typed copies placed on the display board and the Research report.

Our Example - Procedure For each temperature of water (temperature should be stable for each trial and the same throughout the experiment): 1.1 Use the measuring cup to measure 1 cup (8oz) of water 1.2 Pour the water into the cup 1.3 Use the thermometer to measure the temperature of the water 1.4 Record the temperature in your logbook 1.5 Remove the thermometer 1.6 Set the stopwatch in zero 1.7 Introduce the AlkaSelzer tablet in the glass and at the same time start the stopwatch 1.8 Observe until the Alka-Selzer has disappeared and stop the stopwatch at that time 1.9 Record the time in your logbook

Controlled Experiment Control Variables are used to compare the outcomes of the experiment. Our Example – Control Variable The water at room temperature will be used to compare the rate of reaction between the hot water and the ice water.

Trials It is important that a scientist conduct multiple trials to see if the data they collected is valid. How many trials do I have to do for my experiment? 10 Trials

Data Table Math teachers will assist students in building their data tables and graphs. Data must be written in the logbook for every trial. Remember: Data Table and Graph should be on P. 8 of the logbook.

Remember: Data Analysis and Graph should be on P. 8 of your logbook. Identify any patterns. Identify and explain any expected or unexpected results. Identify any data errors and possible causes. Explain the meaning or implications of the data. Remember: Data Analysis and Graph should be on P. 8 of your logbook.

Conclusion Make sure to include the following: Restate the hypothesis Was the hypothesis supported by the data? What happened? Why did this happen? Support with actual data from the data table. How could the experiment be applied in the real world? Remember: Rough draft of conclusion should be on P. 18 of your logbook.

Abstract: The Last Thing (Should be 3 paragraphs and written in 3rd person past- tense) 1st paragraph: Re-State the problem or question you are trying to solve in the experiment. 2nd paragraph: Summarize the procedure. 3rd Paragraph: Summarize your results shown in your data table and graphs and state your conclusion

Research Report The research report must be submitted in a duotang folder or a report cover. You will need to print two copies of some of the sections from your research report to be used for your display board.
