Plate Tectonics  Lithosphere – the earth’s crust 1) The Earth’s crust is not a continuous, solid rock layer 2) The crust is broken up into smaller units.
The Theory of Plate Tectonics:. The Lithosphere is broken into separate sections called plates. The plates fit together along cracks in the lithosphere.

D42 Plate Tectonics

D42 Plate Tectonics Background 1 Geologists today know that it is not just the continents that move – it is the entire surface of the Earth! The Earth’s surface is broken into large sections called plates. These plates not only include the surface of the Earth but also extend down into the solid part of the upper mantle.

D42 Plate Tectonics Background 1 This is one reason that geologists use the term “lithosphere” to describe the combination of solid crust and upper mantle. Plate Tectonics is the movement of these lithospheric plates. CHALLENGE QUESTION: How did continental drift lead to the theory of plate tectonics?

D42 Plate Tectonics Procedure Read Sheet 42.1 about Plate Tectonics Video. See continental drift & plate tectonics video. Answer as many of the questions as you can. Watch the video again. Complete Sheet 42.1

D42 Tectonics Analysis Date_______ Name___________________ Hour__ Copy and Explain using complete sentences. Why were scientists surprised to find coal in the Arctic? Explain. Draw a Venn diagram with two large circles. Compare Continental Drift & Plate Tectonics. Write at least 5 facts on the diagram and include some in the overlap area.
