What is financial aid? Financial Aid is any resource that can assist in off-setting the cost of attending college. What are the sources of financial aid? Federal government States Schools/Institutions Private sources Ask: How many people only think of financial aid as free money?

Scholarships and grants Types of Financial Aid Self-help aid Gift aid Scholarships and grants Repayment is not required Applications may be necessary Work-study and loans Part-time on- or off-campus jobs Repayment is required for loans

Categories of financial aid Need-based Pell FSAG Subsidized loan Talent-based Athletic Musical Artistic Need-Based Aid ( Grants ) Pell FSAG 1st Generation Grant Merit-Based Aid ( Scholarships ) Bright Futures UNF Presidential Non-Need-Based Aid Merit-based Bright Futures UNF Presidential Non-need-based Everything else

Self-help aid Self-help aid FWS Direct loans PLUS loans Need-based award that allows a student to work part-time for an institution or within the community. FWS Direct loans Need-based (subsidized) and non-need-based (unsubsidized) loans that have to be repaid. Sub = 4% interest rate for 15-16 Unsub = 4% interest rate for 15-16 PLUS Loans = 7% interest rate for 1516 Repayment begins six months after less-than-half-time Seven different repayment plans Private Loans = Avoid at all costs PLUS loans Non-need-based credit loans for which parents can apply.

Applying for federal aid FAFSA — Free Application for Federal Student Aid 2019/2020 application: Available October 1 Takes approximately 30 minutes to complete Needs to be renewed each year Priority consideration is October 15 www.FAFSA.ed.gov UNF FAFSA School Code = 009841

Applying for state financial aid Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) Takes approximately 15 minutes to complete www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org Must apply before August 31 the year of high school graduation UNF PSI Code = 161

State financial aid 2018-2019 Bright Futures initial eligibility Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) High school weighted GPA of 3.5 29 ACT/1290 SAT 100 community service hours Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) High school weighted GPA of 3.0 26 ACT/1170 SAT 75 community service hours UNF PSI Code = 161 Complete the required high school coursework; Achieve the required minimum high school GPA Achieve the required minimum score on ACT® or SAT® Complete the required number of service hours.

Automatic UNF merit-based scholarships Presidential Scholarship Program Presidential Scholarship Program Students can be awarded up to $24,000 over four years Monetary values are determined by combination of student’s grades and test scores Awards are provided on a funds-available basis Apply early for admission to UNF Once admitted, students are eligible for review for merit awards UG, Fall / Spring, On-Campus

Finish in four Scholarships Complete 15 credit hours during both the fall and spring semesters Most UNF scholarships require 15 credit hours per semester for renewal each year

Finish in four Excess Hours Surcharge Since 2009, the Florida legislature has encouraged students to finish a bachelor’s degree in a timely manner The law requires universities to add a surcharge to each credit hour taken in excess of the total number necessary to complete the degree The cost of delaying graduation by even one or two years can be high Most scholarships renew for four years; we encourage students to complete a degree in this timeframe so they are not here without funding
