Anything that has mass and takes up space Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space

Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space. Every sample of matter is either: An element A compound Or a mixture

Matter example Gold is an element Water is a compound Italian Dressing is a mixture

Element: a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances. Carbon Hydrogen Iron

Atom: smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical property of that element Each element is made up of one kind of atom Diamonds and Graphite are both made from Carbon, but each is made from a different form of Carbon.

Atom: the smallest unit of an element Carbon has multiple forms, including diamond and graphite, but each form is made of carbon atoms.

Molecule:smallest particle of a substance; made of one atom or two or more bonded together Some elements like neon are found uncombined in nature. Other elements such as oxygen, form molecules that have more than one atom

Compounds: a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements Water is a compound made of Hydrogen and Oxygen. Chemical formulas represent compounds C16H10N2O2 represents the compound Indigo

Put it all Together:

ATOMS MOLECULES Carbon Dioxide: CO2 Water: H2O Ammonia: NH3 Table Salt: NaCl Bleach: NaClO Sand: SiO2 ATOMS
