Presentation transcript:

Bellwork Which of the following statements best explains why the Ohio River Valley set the stage for war? The British were planning to use the land for farming and the Dutch wanted to go hunting for furs. The British had planned to settle the land and set up farms, while the French wanted to hunt for furs. The French had wanted to start farming to take advantage of the fertile soil, but the British were there. The population of the French colonies was expanding rapidly. Why would many of the Native Americans, especially the Algonquins, have sided with the French? The British had forced many Natives off their land, while the Iroqouis were very friendly to the other Natives The French had been friendly to the natives and set up trading posts and the British took up a lot of room and tried to force them into Christianity. The French had paid off the Native Americans to be their allies The British were not popular with the Natives thanks to Robert LaSalle.

Bellwork (Continued) 24. Which of the following statements about Benjamin Franklin is NOT true? He came up with the Albany Plan of Union, which would allow the colonies to share finances and military forces for defense during the French and Indian War. He invented the ‘double spectacles’ (bifocals) to help prevent people from losing or breaking so many pairs of glasses. He wrote and published an book under the pseudonym Richard Saunders, and letters under the name Silence Dogood. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the third president of the United States, and he is on the $100 bill.

Salutary Neglect (When the British ignored the fact that colonists were breaking the laws, then tried to enforce the laws and wondered why they got so upset about it.)

Salutary Neglect—a long-standing British Policy in the 13 colonies which allowed the colonists to flout, or violate, the laws associated with trade. There were no effective enforcement agencies (too expensive to send British troops to America Lasted from the 1690's to the 1760's and benefited the colonists by boosting their profits from trade.

Why do something that seems so dumb? The British policy of Salutary Neglect was, most importantly, about the profits that could be made from the raw materials in the colonies. Great Britain adhered to the philosophy of Mercantilism which came to mean that colonies existed for the good of the mother country. The famous British Prime Minister Robert Walpole stated that "If no restrictions were placed on the colonies, they would flourish". When the Colonists made money, they were happy and easy to manage.

Problems with Enforcement: During the early period of colonization there were no effective enforcement agencies in place because: Distance & Transport: 3000 miles from England to the colonies Complex Logistics: Required difficult coordination of people, facilities and supplies Expense: Too expensive to implement Political Dangers: Dissatisfied and discontented Colonists would find a willing ally in the French

Trying To Start Enforcing The Rules: The British reversed their policy so that they could raise taxes in the colonies to pay for the massive war debt incurred during the French and Indian Wars.  The reversal of the policy of Salutary Neglect led to rebellion in the colonies, the Boston Tea Party, and the Declaration of Independence.

Effects of Trying To End The Policy: The colonists vehemently protested against the new laws and the Sons of Liberty was formed. The Boston Tea Party affair followed which was as a result and in opposition to the Tea Act. The American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence was the inevitable conclusion to the laws and taxes imposed by the British on the American colonies - which had been fueled by their attempt to end this policy.

Self-Government and Land Ownership: The colonists had worked hard to establish the colonies. Since Jamestown and Plymouth, the colonists were used to running their own lives the way they wanted. Now the British were trying to re-establish themselves as the authority figure. Colonists were too independent and too proud.

In your notebook, on a new sheet of paper, create the following: On the top third of the page, write a summary of 3-4 sentences explaining what salutary neglect was and why the British allowed it to happen. In the middle of your paper, draw a picture showing the British point of view of why it should come to an end. In the bottom third of the page, draw a picture from the colonists point of view that EXPLAINS WHY THEY FELT THE NEED TO PROTEST SO VIOLENTLY. Summary of what Salutary Neglect is, why it happened, and why it had to end. Picture illustrating why the British wanted to end Salutary Neglect. Picture illustrating why the colonists reacted so violently.
