Focus Question # 24: How did the Middle Kingdom of Egypt contribute to the development of world civilization?

The Rise of the Middle Kingdom The Old Kingdom of Egypt came to an end around 2,000 B.C.E. The Middle Kingdom took its place and was a time of great prosperity and change; The Pharaoh increased his control over larger territory by appointing local governors who reported to him directly; The Middle Kingdom increased its wealth by trading with the kingdom of Nubia, which was rich in gold; Egypt sent many trade expeditions to Greece and the Fertile Crescent;

Foreign Invasion: A people from the western hills of Asia, the Hyksos (HIK-sos), invaded Lower Egypt; They were skilled in warfare, using bronze weapons, sturdy bows, and horse-drawn chariots to conquer the Egyptians; The Hyksos ruled for 100 years, beginning in 1,650 B.C.E. In 1,570, Pharaoh Ahmose I (The First) raised an army and led the Egyptians to defeat the Hyksos.
