Effect: Americans must prepare for a NUCLEAR war  Building bomb shelters Air raid drills – “duck and cover” drills at schools Stocking up food & water for surviving a nuclear attack EMOTIONAL effect: ANXIETY about the FUTURE: will we SURVIVE ? Where do we see this ANXIETY expressed in society/culture? LITERATURE, TV, FILMS LIKE “THE INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS”

EFFECT: Communism will INFILTRATE & SUBVERT America from within Americans worry about SUBVERSION (“to destroy ideas or principles and to replace them with others… to overthrow the government”) Comm.
