What is Science? Science is the orderly method to solve problems and investigate the world. “Invention or Discovery” Discovering the vaccine for polio

Technology Applied science Using the iPhone

How do you make an observation? Use your 5 senses (seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting and smelling) Take measurements, make pictures, charts, tables & graphs of information collected.

What is an inference? A conclusion based on known information or observations. You see a picture of people standing in winter conditions. You infer that the people in the picture are cold. Your friend enters the room with an umbrella and water on his raincoat. You assume or infer it is raining outside.

Theory A solution to a problem that has been tested 1000’s of times and always found to work. Example: Big Bang Theory

Example: Ice always melts when heated Law A rule in nature Example: Ice always melts when heated **Either can change if proven wrong by new observations or new technology

Models A representation of an object or system (objects or ideas can be models) Example: Model plane, globe, model of an atom

Is this science or technology? Invention of the wheel Science Using the wheel on a car Technology

Is this science or technology? Discovering a vaccine for the swine flu virus Science Applying the vaccine for the swine flu on people at the doctors Technology

Is this observations or an inference? The plant grew 5 mm Observations (measurement) It is cloudy, it is going to rain inference

Is this observations or an inference? The rotting meat smells Observations (senses) She drives an expensive car, she must be rich inference

Is this theory or law? law Gravity pulls every object down at a rate of 9.8 meters/second2 close to the earth’s surface. theory When you drop a pen it falls to the floor. law Put it to the Test
