Do Now Grab a computer with a buddy Take out notebooks. Make new notes heading: “6.1.5 Legitimacy vs mob rule” Turn in 6.1.4 learning check if you have not already done so.

6.1.5 Can explain how and why the French Revolution came to an end—including the Reign of Terror, the Thermidorian Reaction, and Napoleon’s Empire. Can evaluate the lasting effects of the Revolution. Why did it come to an end? Today the Reign of Terror and the Thermidorian Reaction. Tomorrow Napoleon and the effects of revolution. Wednesday and Thursday.

Where were we? Estates General 3rd estate bourgeoisie revolt. King resists the revolution. Radicals take over. King is executed. First French Republic comes into being (the National Convention).

The Big Question: Why did the French Republic fail? Make a prediction A few commonly said: Economic problems Bad leadership Unrealistic goals Too early, too many opponents to democracy

Legitimacy Mr Best’s answer: the Revolution failed because it allowed its legitimacy to be compromised by the Parisian mob. Legitimacy: the state of having your authority recognized and accepted by the people.

Legitimacy vs Mob Rule In the French Revolution, 2 different movements took power away from the King: The French Revolutionary Government: a mostly legitimate legislature. The Paris Mob: put the government at the mercy of its discontented citizens.

Assignment: Legitimacy vs Mob Rule Today, you will assess events for whether they gave more power to the mob or to the legitimate government. Make a 3 columned chart. Name of event & brief summary (if you don’t already know the event). What did this do to give power to the legitimate government? What did this do to give power to the mob?

Assignment: Legitimacy vs Mob Rule You need to look up the following events: Tennis Court Oath Storming of the Bastille The Women’s March The Declaration of the Rights oMaC 10th of August Insurrection September Massacres Execution of the King
