TRANSITIONS Bonnie Solt Prunty Dean of Students Kevin Perry Presented by: Bonnie Solt Prunty Dean of Students Kevin Perry Associate Director for New Student and Transition Programs

Research Shows One thing we know about persistence is that involvement matters. The more academically and socially involved individuals are -- that is the more they interact with other student and faculty -- the more likely they are to persist. (Astin, 1984; Mallette & Cabrera, 1991; Nora, 1987; Pascarella & Terenzini, 1980). According to Astin (1977) student-faculty interaction has a stronger relationship to student satisfaction with the college experience than any other involvement variable, or indeed, any other student or institutional characteristic. Astin (1996) research finding strongly supports the importance of “involvement” as a powerful means of enhancing almost all aspects of undergraduate student’s cognitive and affective development. The three most potent forms of involvement are academic involvement, involvement with faculty, involvement with student peer groups. The strongest single source of influence on cognitive and affective development is the student’s peer group.

Top 5 Differences between High School and College As reported by current IC students: 5. You actually have to do the work (and there’s a lot of it!) 4. You have to do your own laundry. 3. You receive as much of an education outside the classroom as inside. 2. You will suddenly get very poor. 1. You need to learn how to live with people who are different from you and know nothing about your history.

How can you help your transitioning student? According to current Ithaca College students, the biggest ways you can help your student transition to college are…. Teach your student how to do laundry; Help your student develop a budget and learn how to do their own banking; Provide support and advice without solving the problems for them; Shift responsibility for college preparation from you to your student (ie: filling out forms, reading materials); Encourage your student to make calls or contacts about concerns first.
