An Institutional Approach to Embedding Race Equality in the Curriculum Andrea Cameron and James Nicholson

Institutional Context University’s mission to widen access Strategic decision to internationalise the curriculum Leadership – a willingness to address issues of equity and fairness Race Equality Charter Mark SAT – drawn from across the University/and grades Survey and focus groups with BME staff and students Analysis of Student and Staff data Recognising and owning our deficiencies Action planning and commitment Embedding Equality and Diversity in the Curriculum project

Scoping Exercise pockets of good practice dependent on subject discipline; a sense from some staff that “we already do all of this” a belief that students were being exposed to a multicultural range of theorists within some disciplines; sensitivities eg. concerns about causing offence; limited diversity of the current population potentially limiting cultural exposure in the classroom; opportunities for student mobility but some underutilisation

Post-scoping objectives develop continuing professional development (CPD) activity for staff to enable the delivery of an inclusive pedagogy provide staff development opportunities that will foster the 4Cs: namely, Confidence; Capability; Competence; Capacity examine student mobility and employability pre- and post- graduation evaluate the student experience.

Staff development

Resources TLE seminars NetTLE HR training packages Lead Voices network Case studies of good practice HEA resources to support the Equality standard at programme level (understanding, developing, enhancing, excelling). Mentor networks Next steps – roll out training, recruit mentors/champions, publish resources/case studies; use ILR/QR to map progress on EEDC/student mobility.

Attracting Diversity SFC objectives Outcome agreements Work with ECR and programme leads barriers are often reinforced by the complex processes of social reproduction (Bourdieu 2010; Leese 2010) that ensure that many feel that higher education is “not for the likes of us”. Work on imagery/marketing/promotion materials

How would you approach embedding equality and diversity in your own institutions' curricula?
