I’m pretty sure that’s what stamps cost in 1991, silly! What Do You Already Know About Columbus? One thing is certain, the United States of America seems to respect this man and his accomplishments. Do you think our teacher remembers when stamps only cost 29¢? I’m pretty sure that’s what stamps cost in 1991, silly! Well he is widely credited with discovering America. They put his name on a stamp? Nah! That had to have been 50 years ago!

Reasons For European Exploration: Quick Review Reasons For European Exploration: Small areas were joining together to form nations such as: England Portugal Spain France Italy These nations were led by kings and queens.

Reasons For European Exploration: Quick Review Reasons For European Exploration: There were many improvements in science and technology that made exploration safer and easier. Astrolabe Better Maps Better / Stronger Ships

Reasons For European Exploration: This land now belongs to England! Quick Review Reasons For European Exploration: There was interest in gaining knowledge about new places. This land now belongs to England! And claiming it as their own…

Reasons For European Exploration: Quick Review Reasons For European Exploration: Europeans wanted to do more trade with Asia. They also wanted to find a quicker route to do that trading. Cause food tastes better when it is properly seasoned! Especially spices!

I wonder if all the explorers were this good looking! Portuguese Explorers led the way in finding a sea route around Africa. Bartolomeu Dias sailed along the coast of Africa and around its southern tip in 1487. I wonder if all the explorers were this good looking! Vasco Da Gama sailed all the way to India between 1497 and 1499.

Portuguese Explorers As Portugal used these new trade routes, it became wealthier and more powerful.

Who was that Italian Sailor? As the Portuguese were trying to sail around Africa, an Italian sailor presented another plan to the King and Queen of Spain. Who was that Italian Sailor?

A Guy Named Columbus Wagner

Columbus thought he could sail west and reach Asia faster. He really thought he would reach India… What does Columbus’ original plan tell us about his view of the world?

Columbus believed that there were only 3 continents Africa Asia Europe

Since Columbus thought the world was round, he believed he could sail across the Atlantic to Asia. This is totally messing with my mind, right now! Didn’t Columbus think the world was flat?

Columbus received funding from Spain for his expedition.

Group Research Time! Work with your group to research Christopher Columbus. Complete the chart using information from your research.

What effect do you think the first voyage of Columbus had on other countries in Europe?

Kings and Queens considered sending ships across the After Columbus, many European Kings and Queens considered sending ships across the Atlantic to Asia.

England In 1497, the King of England paid an Italian Sailor (Giovanni Caboto) to lead a voyage across the Atlantic. Cabato sailed far north of Culumbus’ route and probably reached present-day Newfoundland. He returned to England claiming he had found China. He became a hero in England and was given an English name: JOHN CABOT

Data Chart Columbus’ voyages resulted in more explorers visiting North & South America. Once in this New World, the explorers claimed land as their own. Do you think Columbus is responsible for this trend? Why or why not? What might have happened if Columbus never sailed to America?

Describe the differences between the maps. Map Of The World in 1507 Map Of The World in 1587 Describe the differences between the maps.
