Random Vocab Word! Axis a central or principal structure, about which other things are arranged

Body Planes Median Sagittal Transverse Dorsal

Median Plane (Midsagittal) Comes from the Latin “medius” meaning “middle” Divides the body into right and left halves when viewed from the front

Planar Directions There are two directional terms associated with the median plane Medial Closer to the median plane Lateral Further from the median plane Toward the side

Sagittal Plane From the Latin “sagitta” meaning “arrow” Any plane parallel to the median plane

Transverse Plane Passes through the head, trunk, or limb Perpendicular to that part’s long axis

Dorsal Plane (Frontal) Longitudinal Parallel to the body’s dorsal surface At right angles to the median plane
