College Affordability Summit University of Illinois at Chicago February 26, 2010

Five facts

Fact 1: Illinois is pricing students out of college opportunities. In Illinois, the proportion of students from low-income families in college has decreased during the past decade.

Fact 2: As state support for higher education has declined, tuition has risen.

Fact 3: Students’ tuitions help pay for unfunded mandates

Fact 4: College takes bigger bite from family paycheck. % of family income needed to pay college expenses (minus financial aid) at public 4-year colleges.

Fact 5: Tuition and fees have outpaced need-based financial aid.
