Advertising 101 What is the purpose of ads? Where do you see ads? Do ads ever lie or mislead us? How do ads work?

Remember the Got Milk Ads? Milk commercial What made these ads so successful? What techniques were used?

Ten Basic Techniques of Persuasion The following is a list of various strategies that advertisers use to entice us: Humor- funny or crazy images Macho- strong, tough, powerful- usually males. May carry weapons or be pictured in dangerous situations Friends- Groups of people enjoying each other and doing things together Family- Mother, father, children or a family Fun- Everyone is happy- smiling and laughing Nature- Outdoor settings- mountains, ocean, desert, snow, flowers, etc. Sexy- Emphasis on physical attributes Cartoon- People or animals portrayed as drawing or animation 9 Celebrity- Someone most people recognize Wealth- Expensive and elegant places and things

Task Find three ads and cut them out. Underneath each picture state what the product, brand, and company name is. Also, what audience do you think this company is targeting? Write what advertising techniques were used

How does the medium change the ad? How would M & M’s be advertised on the radio? On television? In a half page magazine ad? In a billboard?

Create an ad for… The ad needs to be placed in: Radio • Billboard TV • Internet Pop-up Ad Magazine • T-shirt or Bumper sticker Newspaper

Questions to consider What differences and similarities did you find by putting the same message into different media? How can the type of media influence the message?
