The Changing Nature of Change Technology and other change drivers have radically altered the nature of change. Change was once a contained, transactional event, easier to manage. Now—more open-ended, radical, complex, personal and continuous. Transformation is the new type of change Not understanding the nature of this change gives rise to many change-related problems Better planning & strategies to overcome resistance are important but not enough

4 Quadrants of Conscious Change Leadership based on the work of Ken Wilber People Individual Content Mindset Behavior Culture Systems Internal External Collective

POLL: Which do you spend the most time on in leading change? CONTENT (solutions) PEOPLE (reactions, buy-in, engagement) CHANGE PROCESS (governance, planning)

Three Critical Focus Areas of Change Leadership CONTENT: What needs to change PEOPLE: The human dynamics of change PROCESS: How change is planned and implemented

Three Types of Change DEVELOPMENTAL Improvements in current state TRANSITIONAL Replacing old state with new state TRANSFORMATIONAL Radical change for breakthrough results-change in culture & mindset

Transformational Change Incremental Change Transformational Change The thinking that exists today in the area where you want to drive a new level of results is sufficient to achieve the desired results. E.g. learning new software; switching from manual to automatic. Achieving breakthrough results requires a change in thinking: revising assumptions and beliefs. E.g. moving to Common Core; moving from top down authority-based structure to shared power.

Transformational Change Transformational Change Incremental Change Transformational Change Leaders need only to change behaviors to achieve results. Training programs will change behaviors. Leaders need to change thinking by surfacing and challenging conscious and unconscious assumptions and beliefs . Building relationships is pivotal.
