INFLUENCE OF TEACHERS CHARACTERISTICS ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN PHYSICS IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ILORIN. KWARA STATE. M.ED Research Proposal Seminar By BAMISAIYE, Taiye Bukola (03/25OC203) Department of Science Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria SUPERVISOR- Esther O. Omosewo, Ph. D.

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION Background to the problem For the past 20 years , nations have reflected on the fact of the problematic science teaching and learning at the sceondary school level.(Harlene, 1999; Tobin & Fraser, 1988; Yager,Hidayat & Pennick,1988) Though efforts have and are being made globallyb to address this issue but it has not yielded the much needed results and therefore deserves further attention. (Olorundare, 2011).

Background to the problem Continued Teacher’s characteristracteristics goes a long way to impact performance of students. For example among various characteristics of teacher are ;attitude, qualification, gender, years of experience

Statement of the problem Explanations for good or poor students’ academic performance have been quite exhaustive, yet controversy still exist among scholars as to what contributes singly or jointly to students’ poor performance. Gravestock and Gregor-Greenleaf (2008) Therefore this study will seek to find out how the teacher’s variables will impact on the perceived teacher’s characteristics needed for students’ academic performance

Purpose of the study The main purpose of the study is to find out The teacher’s attitude that influences students’ performance in physics The influence of teacher’s gender on students’ performance The influence of teacher’s qualification on students’ performance The influence of teacher’s experience on students’ performance

Research Questions The following questions would be answered in this study: What influence has the attitude of physics teachers on students’ performance? What influence has the physics teacher’s gender on students’ performance? What influence has the physics teacher’s academic and professional qualification on students’ performance? Does the physics teacher’s teaching experience influence students’ performance?

Research hypotheses The following hypotheses are formulated and will be tested to answer the research questions; HO1 There is no significant difference in the performance of students taught by male teachers and those taught by female teachers HO2 There is no significant difference in the characteristics of qualified and unqualified physics teachers and its influence on students’ performance HO3 There is no significant difference in the characteristics of qualified and unqualified physics teachers and its influence on students’ performance

Scope of the study This study will be conducted among SS III physics students and their physics teachers in the Ilorin metropolis of Kwara State. The Ilorin metropolis consist of the following LGA; Ilorin East, Ilorin West, Ilorin South

Significance of the Study This study might be useful to the following; Teachers Students Government Educational boards

Clarification of terms and variables Achievement Attitude Experienced Physics teachers Less experienced Physics teachers Performance Physics teacher Qualified physics teacher Students’ attitude Students’ performance in Physics Teacher’s characteristics Teaching Teachers’ attitude Unqualified Physics Teacher students’ performance in Physics

CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE Nature and Objectives of Secondary School Physics Curriculum. Teacher’s Characteristics. Correlates of Students Academic Performance. Approaches to Teaching and Learning of Physics. Role of Attitude in Teaching-Learning of Science. Gender Influence on Teachers Attitude and Students’ academic performance. Teacher’s Qualification and Its Influence on Students’ performance. Teachers Experience and Its Influence on Students Academic Performance. Appraisal of reviewed literature.

CHAPTER 3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Research Type, Sample and Sampling Techniques, Research Instruments, Validation of Research Instruments, Procedure for Data Collection and Data Analysis Technique.

Research Type This research is a descriptive research of the survey type. Questionnaire will be used to gather information from the respondents and result of the last Kwara State mock for SSIII students will be obtained.

Sample and Sampling Techniques The target population of this study will comprise of all secondary school physics teachers in the Ilorin Metropolis of Kwara state. Simple random sampling will be used to select the 30 teachers from the these schools based on their qualification, gender and experience

Research Instruments The research instrument is adapted from the TIMSS and it is titled Questionnaire for Physics Teacher (QPT) it comprises of three sections, section A consist of demographic information of teacher which will include data on name of school, gender, qualification, years of teaching experience, The section B will have a list of 47 items seeking information on characteristics of a physics teacher as perceived by the respondent. Section C will be the State Mock result from the Kwara State ministry of Education.

Instrument validation The research instrument will be validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the department.

Procedure for data collection The research instrument will be administered directly to the teachers and the students state mock result will be obtained from the ministry of education, Ilorin.

Data Analysis Techniques The data collected from the QPT will be analyzed using descriptive statistics as frequency counts and percentages to answer the research question and t-test analysis will be used to test the hypotheses with the aid of SPSS analysis package, version 17. The analysis will be done on an item by item basis.
