Interactive Fiction

WTF? A computer mediated narrative, similar to the popular “Choose Your Own Adventure” stories. The program gives you a description, you type your action, it gives you the consequences.

Will Crowther (1975ish) A computer programmer and cave explorer, wrote a text-based simulation of the Mammoth caves as a means of bonding with his kids

Scott Adams One of many to be inspired by the game. Added monsters and treasures. Created Adventureland.

Infocom Commercially viable. First “video games” in an adventure sense Zork, Hitchhiker’s Guide, etc.

Demise and Rise Graphics interface lead to decline in sales. Now mostly freeware and community based.

What next? Creation of a reality One world, many stories. Choose your character Choose your fate Perspective, Immersion, Choice.
