1 The Methods of Science Science is not just a subject in school, it is a method for studying the world around us. Science Categories Earth Science Life Science Physical Science
The Scientific Method
Parts of the Scientific Method Hypothesis- An educated guess to solve a problem…stated as an If I do___ then ___. Experiment- A way to test your hypothesis. Variable- A quantity, or trait, that can have 2 or more values. Control- A value that does not change, in an experiment, when other variables change.
Variables Remember DRY MIX Dependent Responding Y variable changes as a result of the experiment. Manipulated Independent X variable is the variable that the experimenter changes to see a result.
Data, Conclusions and Objectivity Data are the values for variables we get from an experiment. Conclusions are the results or determination of the validity of our hypothesis. When our hypothesis has been tested true many times, we can call it a theory. Theories and hypothesis explain, laws describe results in an experiment. Bias occurs if a scientist favors an outcome without valid proof.
Models Models help us to visualize a concept or object in science. A model may look like the object, or it may be a logical model made of ideas, numbers, and words.
