Global Cultures

Culture Culture is the way of life of a group of people who share similar beliefs and customs. Civilizations are highly developed cultures. People belong to an ethnic group, which shares a language, history, religion, and some physical characteristics. A dialect is a local form of a language that may have a distinct vocabulary and pronunciation.

What are some words that are in our southern dialect that others might not know?

Types of Government In a democracy, the government is run by the people. Citizens have a vote to elect officers into and out of office. In a republic, people vote a president into office. In a dictatorship, the leader, or dictator, rules by force. A monarchy is a government led by a king or queen who inherits power by being born into the ruling family.

Write democracy, dictator, or monarch beside each statement. __________ Ruler doesn’t allow elections of public officers, who might take his power away. __________ A prince will move into his position of authority when his father passes away. __________ Anonymous elections are held regularly to elect public officers.

Economies Cultural diffusion is the process of spreading ideas, languages, or customs from one culture to another. Globalization is the development of a worldwide culture with individual economies that rely on each other for resources.

Give examples of cultural diffusion in the USA.

Examples of Cultural Diffusion Spread of small pox to Native Americans Europeans adopted gun powder, the compass, and printing after the Chinese invented them. Religions spread around the world.
