Design an Experiment Activity – Period 1 8-24-17

Topic: Traffic Question: Why is traffic so slow? Hypothesis: A car crashed Prediction: If a car crashed, then that is why the traffic slowed down. Experiment: Went back the next day and tested traffic to see how slow it was. Whether car was left there or a car accident actively occurring. Observed if cops were next to cars

Topic: Dying flowers Question: What is causing the flowers to die? Hypothesis: Flowers are dying because the flowers are not getting enough water. Prediction: If we water 3 plants, one once a week, the second every day, and the third not at all for 1 month, then the 1st plant will survive. Experiment: Water Flower A daily; water flower B weekly; flower C never; same soil, fertilizer, same place, species.

Topic: School lunch Question: Would it affect the school financially if more kids brought lunch. Hypothesis: It would affect the school and school would raise lunch prices. Prediction: If more kids brought school lunch, then the school will raise lunch prices. Experiment: Different schools, tell 1/3 of kids at 1st school, 2/3 at 2nd school, and all of kids at 3rd school. Same lunch program, sister schools, similar student body size.

Topic: Hungry Question: Are you most hungry after a workout or sitting on couch watching TV? Hypothesis: We are more hungry after working out rather than sitting on couch. Prediction: If we work out after school, then we will be most hungry. Experiment: Go to gym/team, another person watches TV. See who is more hungry. Measure hunger scale 1-10 Next day, people switch roles.

Topic: Sick pet Question: How did the panda get sick? Hypothesis: Panda got an allergic reaction because of something it ate. Prediction: If we give the panda different food, then we can see if it has an allergic reaction to it. Experiment: Give panda different foods, look for if it has hives, throws up, swelling. Wait 1 week to look for reaction. Wait 1 week in between giving different foods.
