Maths and Reading Evening Welcome to Year 3 Maths and Reading Evening

Guided Reading 4 times weekly – 30 minutes each time Decoding session – understanding the words (dictionary work) Guided – discussion of text, vocabulary, setting, character etc. Comprehension – questions (independent activity) Inference – understanding a character’s feelings, motives, behaviours and relationships

Sample questions (see booklet) Q1) Explain why Fox became interested in Heron Feather when he heard his song? Q2) How do you think Heron Feather felt at the end of the story? Q3) Why does he feel like that? You have 5 minutes.

Sample questions Skill being assessed: Q1) Explain why Fox became interested in Heron Feather when he heard his song? Skill being assessed: Identify/explain key aspects of fiction and non-fiction texts, such as characters, events, titles and information. Secondary content domain: make inferences from the text. Answer: 2 marks Reference to Heron Feather being a fisherman/having fish and any reference to Fox being hungry/liking fish or thinking he might have a chance of getting fish/a meal – e.g. His song said he was a fisherman and so he might have fish with him Because he mentioned the word fish and he might of hoped there was a fish in his bag Because he said he was a fisherman and Fox wants fish The fox likes fish and the man is a fisherman Heron Feather was singing that he was a good fisherman and Fox was hungry

Answer: 1 mark Any plausible text-based emotion, e.g. Angry / cross / annoyed Embarrassed / silly Sad / upset Surprised / shocked Disappointed Confused

Spellingframe Spelling Frame is an online resource that is optional to use and is being trialled for a year, in 3 classes (Miss Howson, Miss D and mine). Each child has their own login that is linked to their classes current spelling rule. Children have the opportunity to practise their spellings through the use of games. There is also a test facility, so children can see how well they are doing and then retake the test in order to improve on their previous scores.

How can you help your child? 10 minutes daily makes a massive difference Ask questions before, during and after reading

Questions you could ask when hearing your child read Look at the front cover. What could the book be about? What is an illustrator? What do they do? What does that word mean? Who are the main characters? What do you think will happen next and why do you think that? How do you think this character feels? Why? How would you feel in that situation? Can you predict how the book will end? Who is your favourite character? Why? Is there a hidden message in the story? What is it? Can you retell the story in your own words?
