Personal Reading Every day of class, we will start with independent silent reading. Please pick a book that you think that you will like. If you don’t like it, feel free to switch books.

What is AP Language? The equivalent of a freshman composition class in college Primarily non-fiction A possible way to earn college credit by taking the AP Language test A place to review for the SAT Test by using persuasive writing and authentic prompts

1st semester work Learning the language of AP Writing several timed and polished writings Reading and analyzing Brave New World (Huxley) and 1984 (Orwell) Power-point term presentation with a partner

2nd semester work More timed and polished papers Extensive review for the AP Language test in May Othello (Shakespeare) Rocket Boys (Hickam)* Independent reading of personal book (both semesters)

Textbook and materials Night Readings for Writers The New York Times, The Detroit News, The Detroit Free Press, in addition to various syndicated columnists Released AP Language Exams

Other points of emphasis: Relevant current articles are reviewed and analyzed regularly One Book, One School program Alignment of AP Language with the vision of APHS, i.e. encouraging the intellectual growth, creativity, self-discipline, democratic responsibility and physical and mental health Collins Writing Professional Interview Day
