Airbrushing in the Media and how it affects us

Airbrushing Despite the point of view most people take, airbrushing does not only affect young girls and women. Boys and men also see unfair portrayals of people. I’ll be exploring both sides of airbrushing.

Statistics for Women According to surveys performed by the company Dove, Over forty percent of women said advertisements make them feel self conscious about their appearance Ninety six percent of women said they feel that models used in advertisements are not a realistic representation of women today. Another ninety six said they felt that advertisers should be honest about the extent to which they airbrush or digitally manipulate their photos. Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful 11% of girls around the world feel comfortable using the word beautiful to describe their looks

How It Affects Boys Among high school students, 15 percent of guys are attempting to lose weight. More than 40 percent of boys in middle school and high school regularly exercise with the goal of increasing muscle mass. 38 percent of boys in middle school and high school reported using protein supplements and nearly 6 percent admitted to experimenting with steroids On the side are two magazine covers with same person on them. These pictures were taken less than a month apart, yet look very different. They both portray two totally different kinds of ways people should look.

What Dove is Doing About it Dove has had their “Real Beauty” campaign going for quite some time, but here’s an example of what they’re doing about it. http://youtu.be/m0JF4QxPpvM

What’s Up With Teen Vogue? Two girls, Emma and Carina, are protesting against doctoring images. Their meeting with Seventeen had gone well, but in a statement to Jane Dough.com they revealed what happened in their meeting with Teen Vogue. “Following their mock fashion show today, Emma and Carina met with Teen Vogue Editor-in-Chief Amy Astley and her staff to deliver over 25,000 petition signatures and encourage the magazine’s executives to pledge to show real girls on their pages. The meeting lasted less than five minutes, and Astley did not talk to Emma and Carina about their campaign or the magazine’s photoshoot process. Instead, the girls were given copies of Teen Vogue and told to use them to learn more about the magazine.”
