Matter- the stuff that makes up everything in the universe Element- A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical.
There are three states of matter: gas, solid and liquid All matter is made of atoms An element is made up of one type of atom A molecule is a combination.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MATTER Building Blocks of Matter Atoms – smallest part of an element that still maintains the properties of that element Molecules.

Chemistry Vocabulary part 1 IN: How would you describe an atom?

Atom Tiny building blocks of matter, made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons

proton A small, positively (+) charged particle in the nucleus of an atom

Electron A small, negatively (-) charged particle that orbits (moves around) the nucleus of an atom

Neutron A small particle in the nucleus of an atom, with NO electrical charge (neutral)

element A substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances

Periodic table A chart of the elements showing the repeating pattern of their properties

Ion an atom or group of atoms that carries a positive or negative electric charge as a result of having lost or gained one or more electrons

compound by chemical bonds; bonds are so strong that it behaves like a single substance have their own properties that are unique from the elements they are made of type of molecule with more than one element

Molecule the smallest unit of a substance that has all the properties of that substance. (For instance, a water molecule is the smallest unit that is still water)

mixture combination of two or more pure substances in which each pure substance retains its individual chemical properties (Any substance that has a uniform and unchanging composition is considered to be pure.) can be composed of solids, liquids, or gases

ouT Using your vocab, illustrate a model of an atom, including all its particles.
