Context – the circumstances or conditions in which something exists or takes place. Evaluate - to judge or determine the significance, worth, or quality of; assess: Analyze -to examine critically, so as to bring out the essential elements or give the essence of

Static character –a character who is uncomplicated and remains the same without changing or growing throughout a narrative. Dynamic character – in literature, one who evolves and grows in the story and has a complex personality.

Indirect characterization – a narrator’s or author’s development of a character through the character’s interactions with others, thoughts about circumstances, or speaking his or her thoughts aloud. Direct characterization –specific information about a character provided by the author or narrator.

Protagonist –the central character in a work of literature, the one who is involved in the main conflict of the plot. Antagonist – the character who opposes or struggles against the main character.

Flat Character Flat character -a character who reveals only one, maybe two, personality traits in a story or novel, and the trait(s) do not change. Example: In a story about a friendly teacher named Sandra Smith, Louis Drud is a janitor in her building. Louis is always tired and grumpy whenever Sandra runs across him and says hello. In this example Louis Drud is a flat character.

Round Character Round Character - a well developed character who demonstrates varied and sometimes contradictory traits. Round characters are usually dynamic (change in some way over the course of a story). Example: A character in a story named Elaine never cuts anybody a break. She tells her friends and coworkers that charity and compassion have no place in society. On the other hand, Elaine can never pass up feeding a stray kitten or puppy, and always tries to find a good home for lost or abandoned pets. In this example Elaine is a round character.

Motif –a recurrent image, symbol, theme, character type, subject, or narrative detail that becomes a unifying element in an artistic work or text Symbolism –The act of something representing itself and something else on a figurative level. Archetype –universal symbols—images, characters, motifs, or patterns—that recur in the myths, dreams, oral traditions, songs, literature, and other texts of peoples widely separated by time and place.
