Warm – up 8/10-11/2015 BE SEATED BY THE BELL! Essentials: Pen or pencil, Quiz slip, green warm-up slip, IP worksheet. Warm-Up: Answer the following questions in your notebooks. Answer must be written in complete sentences. 1.) Explain how homeostatic mechanisms regulated by negative and positive feedback detect and respond to environmental changes. Give an example of each homeostatic feedback loop. 2.) What are the 6 characteristics that describe living things? 3.) Review body regions and cavities. Agenda DOL: SWBAT identify major body cavities and subdivisions and analyze the importance of anatomical and directional terminology. Homework: body regions IP Announcements: Quiz on Friday/Monday Lab next Thurs/Fri Test August 28th 35mins post class start…..40 mins deep

QUIZ

Welcome to Anatomy & Physiology Anatomy – study of the structure and shape of the body and its parts Physiology – study of how the body and its parts function Gross anatomy – large structures, easily observable Microanatomy – very small structures, only viewed with a microscope

Doctor, Doctor! At a dance off between Lebron James, Stephon Curry flicked his wrist too intensely which resulted in a torn carpal ligament. Lebron rushed to the scene but stumbled due to poor footwork and fractured his fibula. A week later both went in for surgery. In your groups: Choose either Lebron or Steph Curry as a patient. -Patient -Nurse (2) -Doctor’

Rules and procedures of Surgery Patient should lay down on the “surgical bed” aka lab table Advancements in science has proven there is one way that produces a 100% survival rate if surgery is performed exactly to procedures Nurse your job is to read off instructions to the doctor while the doctor performs the procedure. “Using a scalpel make an incision down the middle of the injured region. To the left of the incision insert a microscopic probe be sure not to nick the lateral ligament or an artery. {injury fixed} Stich incision bottom to top starting from the inside.” HOW DID YOU DO?!

Anatomical Position Upright with the feet parallel and flat on floor, upper limbs at sides with palms facing front, and head level facing forward. Supination/pronation

How many ways can you cut the human body in half?

Body Planes There are three body planes: Mid-Sagittal (Median)- divides the body into an equal right and left side. Transverse (Horizontal) - divides the body into a top and bottom. Coronal (Frontal) - divides the body into a front and a back side.

Anatomy Ninja

Sooooooo…….What if…. You are a surgeon and planning to do open heart surgery…. you would need to make a ________________ cut into the chest cavity. You have a patient that has gangrene in the lower portion of their leg and you need to amputate….. You would make a ________________ cut through the leg. The abdominal muscles and muscles of the back are separated by the _______________ plane.

Relative Positions Superior = above Inferior = below Posterior = behind Anterior = in front of Dorsal = at the back side of the human body Ventral = at the belly-side of the human body

Superior vs. Inferior Complete these sentences using the terms superior and inferior. The hands are ________________to the feet The knees are ________________ to the waist. The elbow is ________________ to the wrist. The calf muscle is ________________to the ankle.

Anterior vs. Posterior and Dorsal vs. Ventral Complete these sentences using the terms anterior/posterior and dorsal/ventral. The heel is ________________ to the toes. The biceps are _____________ to the triceps. The hamstring is ____________to the quadriceps

Relative Positions Lateral = away from the mid- line Medial = toward the mid-line Distal = away from Proximal = near Superficial = surface Deep = on the inside, internal to another structure

Lateral vs. Medial Complete these sentences using the terms lateral and medial. The arms are _______________to the midline. The neck is ______________to the arms. The shoulders are ___________to the midline.

Proximal vs. Distal Complete these sentences using the terms proximal and distal. The thigh is ____________ to the foot. The fingers are _____________ to the palm. The elbow is _____________ to the hand.

Latin roots – what body part? language linguist linguini

Body Regions Axial = head, neck, and trunk regions of the body Appendicular = upper and lower limbs of the body

Exit Ticket 1. The lower arm is _______ to the stomach area (also known as the ________ region), while the head (or ________ region) is _________ to the stomach. 2. What is the difference between distal and inferior? 3. Name and describe the 3 body planes. 4. The _______ region is inferior to the tarsal region and belongs to the axial/appendicular region.
