HOW DOES ENERGY FLOW THROUGH AN ECOSYSTEM?  An ecosystem consists of all the organisms living and in an area as well as the nonliving parts of that environment.

Turn to page 54 in your textbooks Don’t forget to put your name on your Cornell Notes!

Food Chain A diagram that shows energy in food flows from one organism to another. Because few organisms eat just one kind of food, simple food chains are rare.

Food Web A diagram that shows the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem. Why do the arrows point in the direction they do?

Energy Pyramid A diagram that shows an ecosystem’s loss of energy. Less energy is available at higher levels!

Primary Consumer A consumer that feeds only on producers Primary = FIRST This is the first consumer in a food chain or food web. What is another term we’ve already learned for a primary consumer?

Secondary Consumer A consumer that feeds mostly on primary consumers. Secondary = SECOND This is the second consumer in a food chain or web. What is another term we learned forsecondary consumer?

Tertiary Consumer A consumer that feeds mostly on secondary consumers. Tertiary = THIRD This is the third consumer in a food chain or web. What is another term we learned for tertiary consumer?

Practicing with Whiteboards ONLY write the answers on your white board CAP the markers immediately after writing the answer You will have 30 seconds to write the answer STAND to show me your answer when I count back from 10 and reach the number 1 The first set of questions will ask you about Food Chains, Food Webs, and Energy Pyramids The second set of questions will ask you about Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Consumers

With what kind of organism do all food chains/webs start?

Food Chains & Webs With what kind of organism do all food chains/webs end with?

Which is simpler, a food chain or a food web? Food Chains & Webs Which is simpler, a food chain or a food web?

Primary, Secondary & Tertiary Consumers What kind of a consumer is the mouse in this picture?

Primary, Secondary & Tertiary Consumers What kind of a consumer is the hawk in this picture?

Primary, Secondary & Tertiary Consumers Which kind of a consumer is most likely to be a carnivore?
