DO NOW: Scavenger Hunt! TAKE OUT YOUR ESRT! Turn to pg. 3

Turn to this page in your ESRT! (PG 2) L.O: NEW YORK STATE LANDSCAPES

Landscapes The term landscape refers to the general shape and appearance of the land. This shape and appearance results from the climate, type of rock, and structure of rock in an area. THERE ARE THREE MAIN LANDSCAPES: 1)MOUNTAINS 2) PLAINS 3)PLATEAU

Each landscapes has its own characteristic appearance. L.O: NEW YORK STATE LANDSCAPES

Characteristics of Mountains: Mountains Also known as Highlands Characteristics of Mountains: High elevation, deformed rock structure, folded and faulted

What does “high elevation” mean? “deformed bedrock structure” mean? What does “high elevation” mean? “deformed bedrock structure” means the rocks in the mountain do not have a natural or normal shape from being pushed up by forces beneath the mountain! “high elevation” means a mountain rises high above sea level L.O: NEW YORK STATE LANDSCAPES

PLATEAU Also known as Uplands They have moderate to high elevation, horizontal rock layers, dissected (cut) by streams

Plateaus have a flat top and its rock layers run horizontally. Notice the horizontal rock layers Plateaus have a flat top and its rock layers run horizontally. Plateaus rise above the ground, but not as high as a mountain

They have low elevation, horizontal rock layers Plains ALSO KNOWN AS Lowlands They have low elevation, horizontal rock layers

Which of these landscapes is a mountain? a plateau? a plain? Plateau: medium elvation Hortzontal bedrock layers Mountain: high elevation Distorted bedrocks Plain: very low elevation Horizontal bedrock

Why is Choice 4 is the best answer? A typical plain, plateau, mountain question: which is the answer and why? Why is Choice 4 is the best answer?

“C” is a mountain: very high elevation, with distorted rock layers “B” is a plain: very low elevation, with horizontal rock layers “A” is a plateau because it is high elevation, but flat on top with horizontal rock layers “C” is a mountain: very high elevation, with distorted rock layers

1. * elevation: the landscape’s height above sea-level Plains: low elevation (at sea level; 0 meters high). Mountains: very high elevation (very high above sea level) PLATEAUS: medium elevation (moderately high).

2. * underlying bedrock structure: the kind of rocks the landscape is made of.

Bedrock Characteristics Some types of rock are more resistant (stronger) to weathering. As a result, landscapes with rocks of different resistance will weather at different rates.

Which bedrock is made of the softest rocks Which bedrock is made of the softest rocks? Which bedrock is made of the hardest rocks? How do you know? More resistant to weathering & erosion Soft rocks & minerals are the least resistant to weathering. harder rocks & minerals are the most resistant to weathering Less resistant to weathering & erosion

A mountain is a high landscape because, the underlying bedrock is made of hard minerals & resists weathering & erosion.

Which rock would be the most resistant rock would be good for mountain building.

A plain is a flat landscape because, the underlying bedrock was soft & easily weathered & eroded.

You are responsible for the landscape regions of New York State! New York State has all three kinds of landscapes!

and the periods and eras when the bedrock layers formed. The generalized bedrock geology of NYS (page 3) shows the bedrocks of New York’s landscapes are made of…and and the periods and eras when the bedrock layers formed.

***note: on the regents you probably will have to use BOTH pages to answer some questions!!!!!! **use the map legend (map key) to help you!!!!!!

Q: what kind of bedrock is the Adirondack mountains made of?

Q: during what geologic period was the Allegheny plateau formed?

what geologic period did the Adirondack mountains form what geologic period did the Adirondack mountains form? What rocks is it made of? use page 2 and use page 3. the Adirondack mountains formed in Middle Proterizoic. Made of gneisses, quartzites and marble

For some regents questions you will the maps on page 2 & 3 Independent work: Color each landscape a different color
