Family Tree & Tiberius

1. Name the 3 men Augustus’ daughter was forced to marry. Why? Augustus had no male children of his own. In order to manipulate who would succeed him, he married his daughter to political hopefuls many times.

Why was Tiberius chosen? Despite Augustus’ careful planning, all of the other planned successors died.

2. What was the relationship of Germanicus to Augustus and to Tiberius? Much like how Caesar adopted Augustus, Augustus adopted Tiberius. Then, Tiberius adopted Germanicus. Adopted Grandson & Adopted Son.

4. What were the Emperors Relationships with each other? Tiberius=adopted son of Augustus *J/C Caligula (Germanicus) = Tiberius’ adopted son *J Claudius= Caligula’s uncle *C Nero= Claudius’ adopted son (great-nephew) *C

Tiberius was a very capable military leader and a sensible civic leader who tried to restrain the budget, but he was dour and unpopular. He is known for treason trials, sexual perversion, and shirking his responsibility by going into seclusion.
