How can I help my child be successful in 1st grade? Make sure your child is reading every night! Read with your child also! Help them to better decode by asking: Does this make sense? Does this look/sound right? Encourage students to slow down to check their work and improve their handwriting. Re-read sentences to check comprehension. Re-read sentences when write to see if it makes sense. Tell your student to worry about spelling correctly AFTER they are finished writing the entire piece. Go back and check it. Get their ideas out first.
