Welcome Back to Mr. Morgan’s Science Class Welcome Back to Mr. Morgan’s Science Class! Time to re-introduce the rules and policies, and learn what is new

As of today, nobody has lost any points…nobody has fallen behind…and nobody has gotten even a single question incorrect EVERYONE in this classroom is on track to get an A Your first graded assignment is at the end of this powerpoint

Bell-ringers…lets do this a little better Every day, quickly look for the bell-ringer topic and get started Each entry should be formatted with… Date Bellringer # Question Answer Bell-ringer entries should be 1-2 PARAGRAPHS… not 1-2 sentences 2nd 9 weeks was graded more harshly…3rd? I have new composition notebooks- 50 cents each

Information on my whiteboard Every day, you need to review the information on my whiteboard Check the “calendar”- know what happened LAST WEEK, what is happening THIS WEEK, and what will happen NEXT WEEK Items in RED are graded assignments that have already happened. It is YOUR responsibility to get caught up if you miss anything Late work is accepted all the way until the end of the grading period Check the “objectives” to know what we are working on each day Check the “scale of understanding” to figure out your level of understanding, and what you need to do to get a better grade

The Scale of Understanding A- You could write a detailed essay on the material. You UNDERSTAND the material well enough to tutor other students. B- You have MEMORIZED the vocabulary, and know SOME of the big ideas. You could do well on a multiple choice test, but might struggle to write an essay. C- You have MEMORIZED MOST of the vocabulary, and you know a LITTLE about the big ideas. You might mix up main ideas on a test. D- You can RECOGNIZE some of the terms and ideas, but don’t really understand them all. You would struggle on a test. F- You DIDN’T LEARN anything. You likely need to pay better attention and give more effort. You are not ready to test.

Lessons I will continue to present each lesson with a powerpoint presentation I will continue to review in the same way Vocab day Powerpoint review day Kahoot! Review day YOU ARE EXPECTED TO READ THE LESSONS ON YOUR OWN, EITHER BEFORE OR AFTER THE LESSON IS PRESENTED IN CLASS

Books and shelves The class shelves are there for your convenience, to store your text books and bell-ringer notebooks YOU MAY TAKE YOUR BOOKS HOME ANY DAY YOU WANT TO….YOU DO NOT NEED TO ASK MY PERMISSION TO TAKE YOUR BOOK HOME. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR HAVING YOUR BOOKS BACK HERE EACH CLASS PERIOD

Classroom Rules Respect everyone and everything in this classroom Raise your hand to speak…only one speaker at a time Clean up after yourself Phones and electronics allowed only with prior approval Only one student at a time may leave class for the bathroom/water

1. Respect everyone and everything in this classroom Here are some things that need to NOT happen in 2016 Throwing, tossing, or dropping books or supplies Wasting class time with off-topic conversation Wasting class time by not getting started quickly enough Disrespecting anyone in any way Bullying or mistreating other students in any way Things that WILL happen in 2016 We will conduct ourselves properly We will become model students That face you make when kids are wasting class time

2. Raise your hand to speak…only one speaker at a time Mr. Morgan ALWAYS has the floor…it is your turn to speak only when called on Just because you raise your hand and you are called on to speak, does not mean you can talk about whatever you want. Your questions and comments may only be related to the subject matter This classroom is not the place to talk to friends, it is not a place to get attention, and it is not a place to satisfy random curiosities. This classroom is a place to learn science…the science lesson that I am teaching Just because one person says or does something mildly amusing, does not give the class permission to “explode” in conversation and comments

3. Clean up after yourself You don’t live in a barn…clean up your mess Things I shouldn’t see when you leave my classroom Paper scraps on the floor Pencils/pens left behind Drawing on the desks Desks out of alignment Any other mess you left behind

4. Phones and electronics allowed only with prior approval To be clear…you may only have your phone or other electronic device out in the open when I say it is ok to do so If I haven’t told you it is ok to have it out, it needs to be put away in your pocket/backpack, etc. In 2016, if I see any phones or other electronics out, and I have not authorized it, I WILL take them away When we are doing quiet bookwork or studying, you may ASK if you can have your electronics out…do not assume it is OK

5. Only one student at a time may leave class for the bathroom/water You MUST ask me first You MUST sign out If you leave in the middle of a lesson, you are still responsible for knowing the content being taught Do NOT spend your time in-between classes messing around in the hallway, and then ask if you can use class time to go to the bathroom Use that time wisely

What else is new for 2016? If you hear my bell ring, I am NOT happy…something has gone wrong If a student rings my bell, I am REALLY not happy Lesson quiz corrections may no longer be resubmitted for a grade You need to pay better attention the first time…they are pretty easy now (MC) The corrections aren’t helping anyone learn anything Kahoot! Bonus points are changing From now on, the top 10 teams/individuals OVERALL from all of my classes will all receive bonus points on the exam 1st place gets 10%, 2nd place gets 9%, and so on…. There will be no restrictions on repeat teams/winners

Things we will do this 9-weeks grading period Chapters 7, 8, 11, 14 Lessons with lesson quizzes Labs Vocab assignments and quizzes Chapter Tests Bellringers Written report- scientists DEA testing

I will keep a few hanging up on my wall Poster presentations CANCELLED!!!!! You can take your poster home if you want….if you leave it I will recycle it I will keep a few hanging up on my wall

Ready for the lesson quiz Ready for the lesson quiz? Clear your desk… Take out a sheet of paper and a pencil… On your paper, write “welcome back quiz” and write your name and time block Lets go…

Bellringers should be formatted with? Just the answer to the question The question and the answer The number, the question, and the answer The date, the number, the question, and the answer True or false, items in red on my calendar are future assignments? True or false, I must ask permission to take my book home? Which of the following is acceptable? Using class time to have personal conversations Grabbing your bellringer book and throwing it towards your desk Turning in late work all the way until the end of the 9-week grading period Quietly leaving your seat and walking to the bathroom without asking True or false, students can get on their phones as long as there isn’t a lesson going on?
