Introduction to Microsoft Excel

Spreadsheets A spreadsheet is an electronic file used to organize related data and perform calculations. It is the computerized equivalent of a ledger. It’s a grid of rows and columns enabling users to organize data and recalculate the results for cells containing formulas when any data in input cells change. Better than paper (can erase and modify values easily) They are used for: Keeping track of expenses, annual budgets, tracking donations by charitable organizations, for ploting experimental data by Scientists, creating a list of things to do. 1/12/2019

Worksheets and Workbooks A worksheet is a spreadsheet that contains formulas, values, text, and visual aids A workbook is a a collection of related worksheets contained within a single file. 1/12/2019

Rows, Columns & Cells Rows are identified by numbers Columns are identified by letters Cells are the intersection of rows and columns. Each cell has a unique cell address identified by its column letter and then the row number. For example A1 is the intersection of column A and row 1. The cell reference for this specific cell is A1. 1/12/2019

Entering and Editing Cell Data Data types can be: Numeric (numbers only) Alphabetic (a single letter or strings) Alphanumeric (letters and numbers together) Dates (calendar) In addition to being a specific type, data can be: A constant (value never changes) A formula (arithmetic operations) A function (simple or complex data operation) 1/12/2019

Entering Formulas Formulas are combinations of cell addresses, math operators, values and/or functions A formula begins with the equal sign = Examples: =A1+A2 =C2*5 1/12/2019

Editing cell content Choose the cell and click in the formula bar, make changes and then click enter on the left side of the Formula bar. Double click on the cell ,make changes in the cell and press enter. Click on the cell and press delete for clearing the data. 1/12/2019
