Esperanza in “Four Skinny Trees”: Mamacita in “No Speak English”: Rafaela in “Rafaela Who Drinks Coconut & Papaya Juice on Tuesdays” Minerva in “Minerva Writes Poems” Esperanza’s great-grandmother in “My Name”: What do you think a woman sitting by a window symbolizes? How would you explain this? How does this relate to an effect, purpose or theme statement? The House On Mango Street is dedicated to “A las Mujeres/To the Women.” Why did Sandra Cisneros do this?

Read the following vignettes: The Family of Little Feet (39-42) Chanclas (46-8) Hips (49-52) The First Job (53-5) Sire (72-3)

“The Family of Little Feet” (39-42). “The mother’s feet, plump and polite, descended like white pigeons from the sea of pillow, across the linoleum roses, down the wooden stairs, over the chalk hopscotch squares, 5, 6, 7, blue sky.” (Cisneros, 40). What is interesting about this sentence? Identify 2 similes, 1 metaphor, and 1 example of personification. Why does the man tell them the shoes are “dangerous”? (41). Why are the girls “tired of being beautiful”? (42).

“Chanclas” (46-8). Why does Esperanza focus on her shoes and feet? Do they keep her from having a good time? What do shoes or feet represent?

“Hips” (49-52). Why and how does this vignette use the italicized rhyming? What’s the effect? What is the content of the rhyme? Does Esperanza want hips? Why? Why are hips significant? What difference between Nenny and Esperanza is highlighted?

“The First Job” (53-5). How does Esperanza get the job? How old is she? What happens to Esperanza at her job? What is her reaction? Yours? Why does the vignette end where it does? What is implied? What is left unwritten?

“Sire” (72-3). Who is Sire? What do we know about him? What does Esperanza feel about him? Why does Esperanza have “to prove to me I wasn’t scared of nobody’s eyes, not even his”? (72). What is scary about Sire’s eyes? What does Esperanza imply about Lois? (73). What about Lois interests Esperanza?

The House on Mango Street One of the major theme concepts of HOMS is sex. Not necessarily the physical action, but the way that women on Mango Street are treated sexually, as well as Esperanza’s trip through puberty and development as a woman. In “The Family of Little Feet” the girls find themselves the target of all sorts unwanted sexual attention after putting on heels. In “The First Job” Esperanza is forcibly kissed by a coworker. In “Sire” an older boy leers at Esperanza. Homework 
