Over the next two lessons we will be focussing on what the Holocaust was and Hitler's opinions. We will do this through group work, class discussion and individual reflection. What was the Holocaust?

Starter Read through your worksheet and complete the tasks. Be prepared to feedback! In your books, write down a few sentences describing your understanding of the word “holocaust”

"Holocaust" is a word of Greek origin meaning "sacrifice by fire“. The Nazis believed that Germans were "racially superior" and that the Jews, deemed "inferior," were "unworthy of life." The Nazis also targeted other groups they thought were inferior, such as Gypsies, Handicapped, Communists and Homosexuals.

Hitler's opinions and anti Semitism Historical Significance Learning Gain: All learners will know what the Nazi’s thought of the Jews and how this led to the holocaust. What…? How…? Why…? Objectives: …are we learning this? …are we going to learn? …are we learning? To understand why the Jews what the Nazi views were and this impacted on the Jewish community. Through discussion and a reading and writing activity. So we can find out why Hitler thought the Jews and others were inferior .

Nazi hatred of the Jews In the last two lessons, we studied the persecution of the Jews in some detail. In today's lesson we will be focusing solely on Nazi hatred of the Jews. Can you think of any reasons why the Nazis hated the Jews? Think back to your previous work

Why did the Nazis hate the Jews? Jews in Germany often had money and were concentrated in certain professions – many Germans were jealous of this Jews tended to marry Jews – they were accused of ‘not fitting in’ Jews had been hated for years – in the 14th century Jews were blamed for the plague, 100,000 were killed in Germany Before World War I the German Kaiser said that the Jews were the ‘curse of my country’ In short, The Nazis message was not new, Jews had been hated by some in Germany for a long time

Why Did Hitler want the Jewish people dead? Adolf Hitler was the military and political leader of Germany from 1933-1945. He believed that the reason Germany lost World War One was because of the Jewish people.

Anti -Semitism Aryan Race This is the term given to political, social and economic agitation against Jews. In simple terms it means ‘Hatred of Jews’. Aryan Race This was the name of what Hitler believed was the perfect race. These were people with full German blood, blonde hair and blue eyes.

Sub-Humans The Germans taught that some people weren’t even human, for example Asians, Arabs, and Jews. The largest picture shows a Jewish Man and the writing says “The Jew is a Bastard”.

Where are you on our Learning Mountain?

Evidence In order to understand the underlying causes of the Holocaust, write what Hitler and the Nazis say about different groups and what laws they introduced onto your A4 sheet- you may already be aware of some of the laws from our previous lesson Main Hitler’s views on minorities and the disabled “ He who is not bodily and mentally sound must not be allowed to have children. All they will do is pass bad genes into their children. We must get rid of these people.   Hitler’s Laws against the Jews By 1939 many anti-Jewish laws had been introduced, for example Jews couldn’t marry non-Jews, many were sacked from jobs and could not be out their home between 8pm and 6am

In order to demonstrate your learning and understanding you will complete a written task. This will be started in lesson and completed as homework. Use the information pack provided to help you through this process. Cause & Consequence

Firstly, your article must: Assessment Write an essay to explain what is meant by the “Holocaust” with reference to Nazi views and opinions. Firstly, your article must: Define what the Holocaust was and provide background information Explain the Nazi views and opinions that led to the Holocaust Discuss the consequences of the Holocaust Evaluate the historical significance of the Holocaust Success Criteria Have a clear definition (What was the Holocaust?) Be organised into paragraphs in a logical order Develop ideas within your paragraphs using evidence to support ideas Link your ideas and your paragraphs with connectives Have a clear opening that explains your argument Have a conclusion that links to your argument To make progress this lesson...... >D  Shows some awareness of the Holocaust and anti-semitism C/B  Shows a good understanding of the Holocaust and how Nazi beliefs caused it. A/A*  Shows a thorough understanding of the Holocaust, with clear links to Nazi beliefs.

STEP 1 When writing an essay, you need an argument which you will prove throughout your writing. Essay Question: What is meant by the “Holocaust” and how was it caused by Nazi views and opinions? Your answer to this question will serve as your main argument in your essay. Your introduction will develop around this answer, and your main body paragraphs will prove this argument. The Holocaust was… Some Nazi views and opinions which led to the Holocaust were… To make progress this lesson...... >D  Shows some awareness of the Holocaust and anti-semitism C/B  Shows a good understanding of the Holocaust and how Nazi beliefs caused it. A/A*  Shows a thorough understanding of the Holocaust, with clear links to Nazi beliefs.

STEP 2 Once you have your argument, you should develop an introduction around it. Argument: The Holocaust was … It was caused by … Your argument is quite specific, but for your reader to understand it fully, what else will they need information about? Argument: The Holocaust was … It was caused by … Your introduction should provide information about: WW2 and some key players 5 W’s of the Holocaust The main Nazi beliefs about Jews To make progress this lesson...... >D  Shows some awareness of the Holocaust and anti-semitism C/B  Shows a good understanding of the Holocaust and how Nazi beliefs caused it. A/A*  Shows a thorough understanding of the Holocaust, with clear links to Nazi beliefs.

STEP 3 Your body paragraphs must each be developed around one main idea, and each of these should prove your argument. Argument: The Holocaust was … It was caused by … In each body paragraph, you will focus on one belief or view, and support your ideas with evidence. Firstly, the Nazis believed … Your body paragraphs should include the following: The belief/view which led to the Holocaust The cause that made Nazis believe this The consequences of that belief during the Holocaust To make progress this lesson...... >D  Shows some awareness of the Holocaust and anti-semitism C/B  Shows a good understanding of the Holocaust and how Nazi beliefs caused it. A/A*  Shows a thorough understanding of the Holocaust, with clear links to Nazi beliefs.

Identify the belief/view STEP 3 Your body paragraphs must each be developed around one main idea, and each of these should prove your argument. Our class paragraph One major belief that the Nazis thought, which led to the Holocaust, was that Jews were responsible for Germany losing World War I. This belief was caused by German leaders accusing Jews of sabotaging the German war effort and helping Russia to win the war. Due to this belief, many Germans supported the Nazis hatred of Jews. Some felt that Germany would be in a much better state if not for Jewish people. This belief led to the Holocaust because killing Jews was seen as revenge for their betrayal of Germany. Cause? Identify the belief/view Consequence? To make progress this lesson...... >D  Shows some awareness of the Holocaust and anti-semitism C/B  Shows a good understanding of the Holocaust and how Nazi beliefs caused it. A/A*  Shows a thorough understanding of the Holocaust, with clear links to Nazi beliefs.

STEP 4 Your conclusion must explain how you have proved your argument. You can do this by summarising your main points, and linking them to your introduction. Argument: The Holocaust was … It was caused by … In your conclusion, follow this three-step process. Summarise your main points Explain what’s important Make a link to your introduction In conclusion, the Holocaust was caused by … Your conclusion must. Restate the main Nazi beliefs/views Summarise how those beliefs/views led to the Holocaust Evaluate the most significant causes of the Holocaust To make progress this lesson...... >D  Shows some awareness of the Holocaust and anti-semitism C/B  Shows a good understanding of the Holocaust and how Nazi beliefs caused it. A/A*  Shows a thorough understanding of the Holocaust, with clear links to Nazi beliefs.
