Advancing knowledge on the need for work-related road safety management. THE PRAISE PROJECT PRAISE: A European project for a Global Issue Aim: To advance the knowledge of the need for work-related Road Safety Management. Aim: Examine the work-related road safety standards of EU Member States and carry out advocacy work at the EU level. Sponsors include ETSC members DVR and IBSR and MAPFRE 3 year programme: new publications and handbook, case studies and seminars at national and EU level

ETSC A science based approach to road safety Secretariat in Brussels 59 member organisations from across Europe More than 200 experts contributing to ETSC’s work The European Commission, Member Organisations, Member States and corporate sponsors are funding our work

ROAD DEATHS PER MLN. INHABITANTS IN 2016 and 2010

135,000 seriously injured in road traffic in the EU in 2014 * seriously injured in road traffic in the EU in 2014 *MAIS3+ estimates by the European Commission The Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) is a globally accepted trauma classification of injuries, which ranges from 1 (minor injuries) to 6 (non-treatable injuries) and is used by medical professionals to describe the severity of injury for each of the nine regions of the body (Head, Face, Neck, Thorax, Abdomen, Spine, Upper Extremity, Lower Extremity, External and other). As one person can have more than one injury, the Maximum Abbreviated Injury Score (MAIS) is the maximum AIS of all injury diagnoses for a person.

Multiple partners involved since 2009

Drivers at Risk Drivers and riders of vehicles used for a range of purposes Many people work on, or near the road, for example maintenance workers, refuse collectors, postal workers, vehicle breakdown employees, the police. Who are we talking about? On the roads...for work and to/from work (e.g. company cars, vans, pickups, large goods vehicles, buses, taxis, minicabs, emergency vehicles, construction and agricultural machinery, motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles). Private cars used for work

Road Safety at work in the EU It is estimated that 40% of all road crashes involve people ‘on duty’ and people driving to work or returning from work. (ORSA) It is estimated that in Europe six out of ten work accidents resulting in death are road crashes, including both crashes while driving for work and commuting crashes. (Eurogip)

High burden for society human lives economic loss 40% of fatalities at work High burden for society in terms of human lives and economic loss

235 million Kit Kats NESTLE Case study Nestlé operates upwards of 30,000 vehicles around the globe. The company calculated that in 2004, in Europe alone, it needed to sell 235 million Kit Kats to generate the revenue to finance its motor fleet collision risks. A range of initiatives have since been facilitated, initially through ‘early adopting’ businesses and now expanding globally.  http://www.drivingforbetterbusiness.com/casestudies/nestle.aspx 235 million Kit Kats

Van risk is increasing in Europe as the category of vehicles is unregulated. The report advises employers to pay special care when operating a van fleet and means of doing it.

Fact Sheets: Success Stories Case Study of a company/ organisation Interviews Lessons and illustrations of the thematic reports 9 Completed: Large/Int companies SMEs

Possible measures: Involve Employers Corporate Social Responsibility Risk assessment Safety Plan

Developing a road safety culture acknowledgment of risk and the potential for accidents and injuries, blame-free environment where individuals are able to report errors or close calls without punishment, collaboration across ranks to solve problems and reduce risks, and the commitment of financial and human resources to continually improve safety.

PRAISE Policy and Advocacy Integration of road safety measures into the current Community Strategy for Health and Safety Strategy at Work Work related Road Safety included in the EP Report on Road Safety 2011-2020 (the “Koch” Report).
